Quick as you can say ‘Jackie Robinson.’
A rehearsal was held for a celebration of Jackie Robinson. Performing in the ensemble was a number of well-known jazz musicians, including Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, saxophonist and UCLA alumnus Dave Koz, and former New York Yankee and guitarist Bernie Williams.
The rehearsal was from 2 – 7 pm in Schoenberg auditorium, on Monday, February 4, 2019 and was hosted by Professor Steve Loza, Chair Global Jazz Studies IDP.
I got to the Auditorium at 4 and listened to an hour before they knocked off at 5:15. I snaped these images off.
The photos include: guitarist Bernie Williams and bassist Ben Sheppard. If you know the other players, please let me know in the comments.
Jackie attended UCLA in the 1940s and went on to become the first African American to play baseball in the Major Leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers (now the Los Angeles Dodgers). Jackie Robinson is one of the most celebrated figures to have attended UCLA and is a national and cultural treasure.
